Old-time banjo & fiddle workshop, with Kirk Sutphin & Bertram Levy

The duo of Kirk Sutphin and Bertram Levy is the most unique Southern old-time duo performing today. Their music is deeply rooted in the musical tradition of the Southern Piedmont and combines extraordinary musicianship and innovative arrangements.

This is a workshop for fiddle players and banjo players. The banjo and fiddle players will learn a tune separately and then reconvene to develop variations together. We will finish with a jam where the participants can experiment with the principles discussed in the workshop.

Wednesday, March 12

Thursday, March 13

May Bell Music Presents: Kirk Sutphin & Bertram Levy
in Concert at the Fayetteville Underground
101 W. Mountain, Suite 222, Fayetteville, AR

Kirk Sutphin & Bertram Levy learned directly from the same luminaries in the 1960s. Kirk is recognized as the reincarnation of the Tommy Jarrell’s fiddle style. He is also a masterful banjo player in the style of Fred Cockerham and Charlie Poole. Bertram is one of the original members of the legendary Hollow Rock String Band, which is credited with launching the instrumental old time music revival. His hard driving nylon string clawhammer banjo style is in a class of its own.

Sutphin & Levy concerts are filled with great tunes with that Piedmont swing, and stories about the old timers who taught them. Their newly released second album, “Two Peas in a Pod” is an imaginative look at the Round Peak music of Surry County, North Carolina.
